The Inaugural Balls that take place in and around Washington D.C. have historically been in two forms - Sanctioned Balls, and Un-Sanctioned Balls. A Sanctioned Inaugural Ball is one in which the President-Elect is scheduled to make a personal appearance. The Un-Sanctioned Balls do not have any such guarantee, and as such are not as sought after and thus easier (and cheaper) to attend. In 2012, President Obama elected to have just one Sanctioned Inaugural Ball. The Inaugural Committee has yet to release plans for the 2017 Inauguration, so please check back here for updates.
